Home Gift Shop FAQ

Drive-Thru Tree Park is a privately-owned grove that has been operated by the Underwood Family since 1922. Located approximately 180 miles north of the San Francisco Bay Area, the park was an ideal stopping place for overnight or week-long stays.

In 1937 the Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree was added to provide a unique treat for travelers. Visitors have been taking pictures of their vehicles inside the opening ever since. With the exception of motor homes or vehicles pulling trailers most vehicles will be able to drive through the Tree. Parking is provided for larger vehicles and tour buses.

The photos above show the entrance to the Drive-Thru Tree. The older photos were taken on the hill across the road. Highway 101 ran right in front of the restaurant and office. The sign on top of the office points to the Drive-Thru Tree. These buildings, which were perched over the hill, were removed in the late 1960's when the current four-lane highway was constructed and the entrance was reconfigured. Notice the cafe sign on the tree at the far right of the 1940's photos? The tree still stands at the entrance in the newer photos.

Lastly are four different views of the Chandelier Tree taken around 1937. Two were taken from the field showing a full view of the tree. Charlie and Hazel Underwood are depicted along with the woodsmen who helped carve out the tunnel. Charlie Underwood's brothers Henry and Todd, his sister Tina, and nephew Dale are depicted in the photo with the caption on the back indicating "1937 - first car through the tree".
